Imagine Kraftwerk collaborating with vintage Atmos – you’re halfway there. Reefer Decree was always one of those acts I respected, and recognised was good, but who never quite hit my brainbuttons in the right way. Point Of You, however, is fucking amazing – possibly the most defiantly original and quirky progressive album I’ve heard this year. Breaking News has a sort of Twin Peaks-y intro, a hook that’s a bit Twilight Zone, some samples that are a bit Indian, and a groove that’s solid pornodisco infused with quality, glassy Scando the way you like it.

Point Of You thunks in with a more forceful atmosphere and smothers you in its filthy amyl-disco underpants. Gone For Good has an eerily recognisable midbreak at its heart. It’s fluid, it’s melodic, and it’s full of what makes this album so bloody special – a quality, hefty presence that’s markedly individual, cheekily disco, and brimming with danceability. Agent 508 is a corker: what really strikes on this one is just how fluid it is – a breaksy opening falls into effortlessly-escalating progressive trance of the highest order.

Meltburn (Emok Remix) is startlingly good, as you might expect from a meeting of these two gents. Thumping, pounding stuff that sound better the louder you play it. A Kraftwerky vocal hook keeps it grounded while sounds escalate all around you, making a track that’s simultaneously groovy, eerie, pounding and psychedelic. Love it. 7 Minutes is tecchier, and has an awesome feel as though the sounds are the only things holding each other in place. The percussion is staggering, the hooks are tight and there’s this deliciously addictive 80’s electro fusing all the way through it.

The Final Decree is more in keeping with Oliver’s older sound, updated by way of detour into old Jam & Spoon territory with a touch of Yello, while the original cut of Meltburn has the greater emphasis on percussion and hook. It all comes together on Nightvision – the most defiantly original and quirky track on what we have already concluded is a defiantly original and quirky album. The pace is divine, the groove and chord progression are in complete and utter harmony, and the little melodies in the midrange are some of the finest, most lovable things I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Point Of You isn’t just a solid progressive album: it’s a classic. You’ll still be reaching for this in the years to come, and how often can we honestly say that about anything on psyreviews.
