A new compilation, put together by Safi Connection, on a new label that promises a new take on fullon morning music. Kicking off proceedings we have Beat Hackers with Hello There, possibly one of their most interesting tracks yet. It’s restrained (including the guitars) and the breakdown’s pretty hilarious before it’s Beat Hackers all the way… their sound keeping one foot in the Infected puddle, with firm emphasis on groove. Mekkanika’s Extreme Conditions takes a long time to build up into an unquestionably sweet final run, and Lemurian’s Reflex is a no-nonsense fullpower meltathon, with nice chunks and filters carrying the tune to a tasty buildup and a messy-central closing stompfest. Space Tribe & Safi Connection’s Dinner With God is a rallying cry of “welcome back Olli!” A drug sample, a thumping bassline, fluoro spandex trousers and enough energy to olli-power a city for at least a good couple of weeks. Yeah it’s standard stuff, b ut you can’t help but love it… looking forward to the guy’s set at Boom! this summer. Melicia & Safi Connection’s Warning You is perfectly adequate, except with one objection… it’s too stop-start, stop-start. It’s nice, the sounds are good and the acidy stomp it builds into is particularly tasty-ass, but the runs are simply too short to whip the dancefloor up into the frenzy they were promised in the brochure. Space Buddha’s Exceptional Insight (Remix) is exactly what you’d expect really, great production and full-to-bursting with energy. Nice deep lines and the kind of vibe that you can file under “Proper Goa”. Sally Doolally & Safi Connection’s Nothing Really Matters is utterly great, and the standout tune here for sure: it’s acid techno-ey, dripping with analogue goodness… And the changes! For there are changes, and lo they change and lo it makes the tune more of a dip-in tapas affair. There’s surprises, nice melodies and… it’s very different. We like. S Range’s Lagrange AC is rather tired and limps its way somewhat, certainly not his best; luckily Neo Logic’s Inhere more than makes up for this. Lots of ideas, new noises, a cute guitar line (think monsters of country rather than monsters of rock)… generally an interesting and quirky tune. Safi Connection’s own Hello Houston closes the compilation with a whimper, and then a bang once it hits its final run. All of which adds up to a pretty average collection; the new ideas are fairly few and far between, and while the collaborations are tasty and exciting, you’re also paying for at least three fillers.
