Midimiliz
Passages
Boshke Beats
This should come with health warning: do not listen to this cd while driving. I did, and managed to drive the ten minute journey to work in just over five. I have no idea how this happened. But I can only assume it was down in part to Midimiliz. Interleaved kicks off with that classy, clattering crunch and with the additional aphexy touches it’s enough to keep techno purists gurning along all night. Phenomena shook the car and may possibly have damaged the houses I was driving past with its lethal sub frequencies, and the “propa techno” groove of The Missing Guest hypnotises you before giving you a headbutt you’ll be remembering for weeks. Recent single No Exit sounds just as wicked on here, and Format:Phono is just class. Acidy touches add to the depth, the rhythm hooks are sharp and defined, and it has a spooky, paranoid melody that’ll keep you running and running. Stalker and Baxandall shift the atmosphere more to the back, with a more laidback and easy groove hidden in the chunks, and the timeless detroit classic feel of Mrs Vargas is gobsmacking. Finally Starz has definite anthem potential despite it’s over-used (though individual) sample. The whole Midimiliz sound isn’t to everybody’s taste, but this album takes the subgenre on, gets it in a headlock, kicks it in the balls, and steals its lunch money.
